Achadas da Cruz is located between Ponta do Pargo and Porto Moniz.
It borders on the south with Ribeira da Cruz that divides it from Ponta do Pargo, on the west with the ocean, on the north with Ribeira do Tristão that separates it fromPorto Moniz, and on the east with the mountains of Porto Moniz.
Its land by the ocean called Fajã da Quebrada Nova, being at sea level, has always provided high levels of agricultural productivity. From the top of the cliff, where this hike starts, to ocean level you will cover 500m of vertical offset. Great ocean views can be enjoyed all the way along this ancient trail called Vereda do Calhau, in the past used by locals to access their agricultural lands at ocean level. Once we reach Fajã da Quebrada Nova, you can find the typical palheiros of Madeira, small houses built with basalt stones, and also land cultivated with local production, with a predominance of vineyards and vegetables for local consumption. It´s an idyllic location characterised by the magnificence of the hillside and the crystal clear water, and classified by the Natura 2000 Network, as a site of community interest. On our way up we will take another trail to the other side of the valley. A steep climb with 500 meters of vertical gain, that ends at Santa, already in the Porto Moniz municipality.
