Pico Canário stands at 1550 high in between São Jorge and Boaventura valleys. This is a great trek that can be done in a variety of ways. Although you don´t actually reach a summit  the trail passes through the pic rather than summiting to a viewpoint.  Any of the options to climb Pico Canário are challenging due to the steep vertical gain or abrupt descents. Starting from Boaventura or from São Jorge at around 600 m high, you will pass through a first section of Laurissilva forest. After reaching 1000 meters high, the vegetation drastically changes as you enter a high altitude region, very often above the clouds. The scenery is incredible with views over the Boaventura Valley and Madeira´s central volcanic mountains and rock formations. This route can also be done from Achada to Teixeira passing through Pico Ruivo , the highest pic of Madeira.

VARIATIONS

-From Achada to Teixeira – Pico Canário – Boaventura / São Jorge. Some climbs , but mainly descents (1100 m of vertical decrease).
