The Levada das 25 Fontes (25 Fountains Levada) and the Levada do Risco, are two parallel levadas that start at Rabaçal region and head to the Calheta Hydroelectric Power Station, on the south side of the island. These two are very identical in terms of scenery, from the landscape and floristic point of view, existing, however, many singularities in each of them.

At the beginning of your walk, the landscape is characterised by heaths, which includes Erica arborea and Erica scoparia, as well as Madeira whortleberry (Vaccinium padifolium). These species are part of the Laurisilva forest of Madeira, classified in 1999 as a Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Along the trail, other Laurisilva species will appear at lower altitude.

The route becomes narrow and is marked by the views of the Ribeira da Janela valley, which will accompany you all the way to the origin of the Levada, where you will find a lagoon surrounded by springs and a waterfall. The name 25 fountains comes from the number of fountains and springs that throughout the year fall into the beautiful lagoon.
